Financial and Other Risks to our neighborhoods include:
- Property value loss and/or inability to sell your property. UC Berkeley study shows a 5-7 % average property value decrease for neighborhoods with a power plant, with the number rising with closer proximity to the plant.
- Higher cooling bills in the summer: deforestation creates a 'heat island' effect.
- Remediation costs for water problems: septic, well, flooding, soil erosion, etc.
- Increased need for pest control and costs associated with it: displaced animals can destroy landscaping and bring ticks and tick-borne diseases with them; 'wet' properties can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
